Springfield, IL – An attempt to save a chance to act like a father has failed in the Illinois House.
State Representative Al Riley says men should not be penalized if a birth mother lies to a judge about whether she knows where the father is. Riley says a constituent of his – a fireman who wants a relationship with his daughter – missed a deadline to register as the “putative father” because of this.
Riley says there are men who are responsible enough to at least own up to their parental duties, even if they are never married to the child’s mother.
Riley says he believes the bill fell just four votes short of passage in the House because of confusion over whether his bill discourages adoption.
