Riley to be Honored as Legislator of the Year by Illinois Public Transportation Association

September 20, 2013

State Rep. Al Riley, D-Olympia Fields, was named 2013 Legislator of the Year by the Illinois Public Transportation Association (IPTA).

“Finding ways to provide communities with safe and reliable public transportation has always been a particular area of interest to me,” Riley said. “This year shown the complexity of managing aging public transportation infrastructures as public demand grows and budgets shrink.”

The Legislator of the Year Award is presented annually during the IPTA’s fall conference, to be held next week in Peoria. The award recognizes the support of transit in Illinois and the legislative efforts on behalf of transit providers and consumers.

Earlier this year, to help address proposed fare increases for suburban commuter rail travel, Riley pushed legislation that would require Metra to appear before the General Assembly before boosting ticket prices. Riley also serves on the House Mass Transit Committee.

“I believe that everyone should be able to afford public transportation options,” Riley said. “I am truly honored to be recognized by the Illinois Public Transportation Association. I believe Illinois has one of the best public transportation systems in the world and I’m excited to see how it will continue to evolve.”
The IPTA represents the legislative interests of public transportation operators throughout the state, and promotes a positive image of public transportation in Illinois. They also promote research and investigation toward the improvement of public transportation and facilitate professionalism through training and providing technical assistance opportunities for operators and their employees.
